When thinking of oral health, you probably think of the more common things such as flossing, brushing, and visiting your dentist regularly for teeth cleanings and cavity checks. You may also think about visiting your cosmetic dentist in Chicago or wherever you are located to have your teeth whitened. However, oral health covers a wide variety of issues and doesn’t just consist of cosmetic dentistry and routine visits.

Ailments you may have never even thought about can cause damage to your oral health. A perfect example of this is osteoporosis. Although most people wouldn’t think osteoporosis has anything to do with oral health, the impact it has can be life changing.

How Osteoporosis Can Impact Your Oral Health

It is said that about 10 million of Americans will at one point in their life be affected by osteoporosis. The disease is extremely common in women, as about 80% of those suffering with this condition are female. Osteoporosis is a condition that impacts most of the bones in the body. It is known to weaken them and make them more susceptible to breaking or fracturing. Over time, because of osteoporosis, the bones in the body start to deteriorate.

When it comes to your mouth, bones are what hold your teeth in place! They help to keep your teeth in a sturdy position. But, if you suffer from osteoporosis, the density in the bone that supports the teeth starts to wear down. This means that your teeth no longer have a sturdy base, and are more prone to falling out. This is why it is so important to take care of your entire body, as even the most silent ailment can cause harm to your oral health.

Getting Help From Your Cosmetic Dentist

Chicago's Big Smile Dental OfficeWhile there is no cure or proven treatment for osteoporosis, you can always consult your cosmetic dentist for help. Even though cosmetic dentistry may not seem like something that can help fight against osteoporosis, your cosmetic dentist can recommend procedures and treatments to keep your teeth strong and functional.

Believe it or not, a trip to your cosmetic dentist may be the day that you’re diagnosed with osteoporosis! Your dentist will more than likely look for lose teeth and weak gums that can be pulled away from the teeth. Your dentist will also look to see if your dentures are fitting properly each visit.

Attending your routine visits to your cosmetic dentist will help to ensure that your mouth is well taken care of, and that you are free from osteoporosis. It is always important for your dentist to check out any problems you may have with your teeth.

Though you can regularly visit your dentist for help with osteoporosis, you can also do a few things on your own to help fight against it. One of the best ways to fight against osteoporosis is to eat a healthy diet that is balanced and contains enough Vitamin C and Vitamin D.

Both of these nutrients help to keep the bones in the body healthy. It’s also a good idea to limit alcohol consumption, and to not smoke, as they both damage the body and make it more prone to becoming weakened.

In the end, everyone, including your cosmetic dentist and yourself, can fight against osteoporosis. Be sure to schedule regular appointments with your cosmetic dentist in Chicago, or wherever you call home. Simple visits for routine cosmetic dentistry can not only protect your oral health, but can leave you with a healthier, brighter smile as well.
