Bad Breath Causes and Treatments

Many people are plagued with halitosis, commonly known as bad breath. Living with bad breath is very unpleasant, for yourself and for all the people you meet on a daily basis. Halitosis can make social situations uncomfortable, and can lower your self-esteem.

You do not have to live with bad breath! There are many causes for chronic bad breath, which can be treated quickly and professionally. By taking just a few simple bad breath treatment actions, there is no reason to live in fear of what others think of your breath.

Causes of Bad Breath

More often than not, bacteria in the mouth are the culprits for bad breath. These bacteria serve a natural function in the body, by breaking down food material in your mouth for easier digestion. Left unchecked, these oral bacteria multiply and leave an unpleasant residue on your teeth called plaque. The bacteria can also produce a strong odor after feeding on leftover food particles, causing bad breath.

Another place where bacteria congregate is your tongue. If brushing your tongue is not already a part of your brushing routine, this is a simple change that you can make that may make a world of difference.

Besides the natural odor released by bacteria, there are other reasons for bad breath. The plaque these bacteria create cause damage to your teeth and gums. Cavities allow food particles and bacteria to hide within them, making them more difficult to remove with basic brushing and flossing. Plaque also increases your chance of periodontal disease, which is the infection and deterioration of your gums. As the gums and bones separate from your teeth, periodontal pockets form below the gum line, allowing bacteria to flourish there.

Another reason for bad breath is excessively dry mouth, which is known as xerostomia. When your mouth does not produce enough saliva to wash away food particles and bacteria your chance for bad breath increases. This condition can be increased by smoking, as the smoke dries out the tissues within your mouth.

Treating Bad Breath

Daily care of your teeth will minimize your chances of bad breath. A daily brushing and flossing routine will keep your mouth clean of excess food particles and oral bacteria. A good mouthwash can cleanse hard to reach areas within your teeth and gums. Discuss the proper methods for good dental hygiene with your dentist if you have any questions.

Regular visits to your dentist can keep your teeth clean and diagnose any dental conditions that may be causing your bad breath. After a few simple visits, cavities can be filled and the proper treatment for gum disease can be discussed. Every dental cleaning includes the removal of plaque buildup around your teeth, making your mouth less hospitable to oral bacteria.

Your dentist is there to give you not only a stunning smile, but fresh breath as well! Do not be shy when discussing this embarrassing topic, as there are many simple treatments available to you. Never let your breath make you hide the smile you have worked so hard to maintain. All of the tools you need are well within your reach!
