Porcelain veneers are a popular, versatile cosmetic treatment. They can correct a wide variety of dental complaints, including changing the color of the teeth. They require little to no tooth alteration, and take only a few weeks to complete. That sounds great, but professional teeth whitening can be accomplished in about an hour with absolutely no tooth alteration. So, why would you consider veneers instead? There are two common reasons.
Type of stains
We all know that teeth are supposed to be white. Of course, snow is supposed to be white, but it certainly isn't by the time a few people have walked or driven through it. Just as every mud splatter leaves a mark on the snow, every cup of coffee, glass of red wine, or slice of berry pie leaves a mark on your teeth.
There is also another type of discoloration. What if that snow had fallen on a building, parked vehicle, or even a pile of trash? You would see objects, dark areas, in the white layer. Similarly, some stains are "built in" to teeth because the enamel formed around dark particles.
Basically, stains that have just soaked into the surface from foods or beverages will bleach out easily, but the built-in variety – not so much. Sometimes those tough stains have to be covered up with veneers, because they aren't going to come out.
Teeth whitening is, well, teeth whitening. That's what it's designed to do, and it does its job well, but it doesn't do anything else. You might want to ask yourself if there is anything else you want to change about your teeth. Is it just the color? Do you want to see that chip disappear, close that gap, or round off those sharp corners? Porcelain veneers can accomplish all of this, and more.
