Porcelain Veneers, Are They Right for You?

Dr. Siegel,

My front teeth are very crooked. I never smile because I am so embarrassed the way my teeth look. I would like to have a beautiful smile. I’ve been to several dentists in my area. Several of the dentists thought porcelain veneers could fix my smile but one wasn’t quite sure. The dentists that thought the veneers could work seemed pretty sure of themselves, but I have my doubts. I know you probably can’t tell me a lot with out seeing my teeth, but do you have any suggestions?

Janet in Cleveland

Dear Janet,

Porcelain Veneers for TeethIf you are having doubts about what is the best way for to proceed you must have your reasons. If your teeth are “very crooked” as you said, there might be other alternatives for you to consider. I’ve placed hundreds of veneers. That being said I’m not a big fan of placing veneers on extremely crooked teeth. Most “cosmetic dentists” do not offer complete orthodontics. Have you thought about braces or Invisalign? When teeth are very crooked braces may be the best place for you to start.

Most patients and dentists prefer a quick fix, which are porcelain dental veneers. But veneers only fix the front of your teeth. Your teeth will still be crooked in the back. Food and plaque will still get caught between your teeth and it will be difficult for you to keep them clean.

After braces and possibly whitening your teeth, you may be very happy with your new smile. If you still don’t like your smile it may be because of the shape of your teeth. Braces can’t fix that. I would then consider veneers. At least now your teeth will be straight and easier to clean and maintain. Your gums and periodontal health should be greatly improved. Veneers now would be easier to prepare and place with an increased potential for better results with less tooth reduction. I know braces and whitening will take more then the two appointments you need for veneers but in the long run it might be worth it. It might also save you some money.
