Do veneers cause any risk to a tooth structure?

The use of dental veneers gives dentists the ability to help patients with a variety of dental issues. In the treatment processes of all of these issues, there is very minimal amount of risk to the tooth structures.

However, in some rare cases, patients can face issues with sensitivity. Moreover, the placed dental veneers may need to be replaced. Sometimes, dental veneers have been found to break or de-cement, which is primarily attributed towards the patient’s habits. Once those ‘harmful’ habits are corrected, dental veneers can last well into a decade or more.

Dental veneers provide patients with solutions to a variety of dental issues relating to shape, color and position of teeth. If a particular tooth’s position is minimal, veneers can be used to enhance its present position to a better one. However, patients should be realistic enough to understand that dental veneers cannot correct conditions which involve severe teeth crowding or a tooth that is completely outside the arch. For such a patient, orthodontics or braces will be more useful and effective.

In the modern dental veneer placement process, dentists are often able to keep the preparation in the enamel area. As a matter of fact, depending on the crowding of your teeth dentists can use a special type of veneer which is as thin as a contact lens which requires no preparation. However, in order to give the patients their desired translucency and life-like appearance from the dental veneers, a certain amount of preparation is usually done. Very few cosmetic procedures can create the life changing effects that porcelain veneers can.
