Chicago residents, read about a real tooth vs. an implant tooth

By | | Dental Implants.

Real teeth vs. implant teeth, which are better? Real teeth, that is, the permanent set of teeth, have been around since the tooth fairy whisked away the final baby tooth and left the last bit of change. Most adults have their permanent set of real teeth, which are strong, resilient, durable, and beautiful. However, they can be subject to disease, accident, and other forms of damage and loss. Dental implants are used to replace those real teeth that have been lost due to those reasons. They are also made to be as close in form and function as possible to the real teeth, and have been found to be the most reliable form of replacement.

A dental implant is a tooth restoration that begins at the foundation. The implant is a small titanium screw that the dentist will place in the socket where the tooth had been. Then, he will wait for the osseointegration process to complete. Osseointegration is the process of the jawbone growing around the screw, fusing it into place, and making it a permanent part of the jaw structure.  This can take anywhere from 6–12 weeks. Once it has completed, the dentist will attach a small connector, called an abutment, to the top of the screw where the crown that will complete the implant will rest. Then the crown is fashioned from porcelain that matches the teeth around it.

Once finished, the implant will be visually indiscernible to others. There will be no food restrictions, and the care is exactly the same as for natural teeth. Brush and floss daily and visit the dentist twice a year. An invisible benefit is the bone in the jaw will remain strong, and will not deteriorate due to the loss of the tooth in that area.

Implants are made to be virtually identical to real teeth, so in reality, there really is not a which one is better question. However, an implant is a replacement for a real tooth, and most dentists prefer to allow a patient to keep natural teeth as long as possible. We are happy to answer any questions about the implants, procedure, and other concerns that our patients have. Contact us today at 773-772-8400.

Implant teeth are made to mimic real teeth as closely as possible, so they are not better or worse, but a resilient replacement for a missing tooth.
