While there is no official count for the number of American’s who wear dentures, the total is estimated at 30 to 40 million. This includes about 57 percent of men and women in the 65 to 74 year age group, but there are also quite a few younger denture wearers, including some notable celebrities. They play their tooth loss close to the vest, but it is reported that the self-proclaimed world’s first supermodel, Janice Dickinson has false teeth, as well as Ben Affleck, and Snooki.
What causes a need for dentures?
A partial denture replaces one or several missing teeth. It clips to existing teeth to keep it in place for chewing and speaking. Full dentures replace the entire upper or lower arch of teeth and stay put by natural suction, denture adhesive, or dental implants.
Individual teeth may be knocked out playing sports, or from a fall, a fight, or a vehicle accident. Decay that is allowed to progress or a failed root canal treatment can necessitate tooth extraction.
Gum disease attacks soft tissues, ligaments, and bone which support teeth. Without treatment, advanced gum disease causes teeth to fall out or require extraction.
As you can see, these situations may occur at any age.
Dentures can also be a quick cosmetic smile fix. For example, when child actors lose baby teeth, they are often fitted with dentures to restore their smiles during filming, until permanent teeth come in.
Why wear dentures?
Teeth serve a number of important purposes. A great looking smile gives you confidence in social and business situations. A full set of teeth allows you to eat a nutritious diet and enjoy the foods you love, and speak clearly. Teeth also fill out your facial features to avoid a caved-in appearance.
Dentures are just one tooth replacement option to restore those vital functions for patients of all ages.
