Porcelain dental veneers bring the Hollywood Smile to Chicago

Broad, dazzling grins like those of Matt Damon and Eva Mendes exemplify the “Hollywood Smile.” However, silver screen smiles didn’t always exist. Here is some fun history about the man who made porcelain dental veneers the hallmark of celebrity smiles. Today, Chicago women and men – from stay-at-home wives to business moguls – are also taking advantage of this transformation.

Man behind the magic

In the 1920s most people didn’t take good care of their teeth. “Talking pictures” emerged in 1928, creating a need for actors who spoke well and looked good doing so. Unfortunately, many performers had damaged, crooked, or missing teeth.

Make-up departments at major film companies sought a way to make the smiles of their stars look better on film. Dr. Charles Pincus, dental consultant to the Factor (as in Max Factor) brothers makeup artists, was put to the task of correcting faulty celebrity smiles quickly.

His subjects included:

  • Bob Hope
  • Elizbeth Taylor
  • Fred Astaire
  • James Dean
  • Judy Garland
  • Shirley Temple (who was losing her teeth, like a normal eight-year-old)
  • Walt Disney

Evolving art form

Legend has it that Pincus cooked his first porcelain concoctions on a piece of foil. They were precariously adhered to the front surfaces of teeth; removed for eating and sleeping. By 1937 he devised acrylic veneers, retained with denture adhesive – a slight improvement.

In 1959, Dr. Michael Buonocore developed an etching solution to help porcelain veneers bond permanently to tooth enamel. It took until the early 1980s for this to become a workable solution, but it was game changing.

Thanks to modern ceramic materials and improved bonding agents, you can expect porcelain veneers to last many years with just good regular hygiene.
