Various types of dental floss may be used to keep your Chicago smile healthy

One of the most important things we can do for our smile is to brush and floss our teeth daily. To neglect the second-step of hygiene is to live with the risk of cavity development in between teeth and gum disease. Dr. Siegel encourages his patients to floss at least once a day after brushing and is happy to demonstrate proper technique.

How one flosses depends mainly on existing dental work. Additional aspects of flossing include what type of floss to use. Many different types of dental floss are available to our Chicago area patients. Products may differ in texture, color, and even flavor! Which type you choose will come down to preference, for the most part. If you are not a big fan of flossing or you are choosing floss for a child or teen, flavor can be a very nice attribute to encourage daily use.

What is floss?

Dental floss is a small string of nylon material. Nylon tends to be the most common material due to its gentleness and durability. Each strand of floss is actually several smaller strands of nylon that have been twisted together.

Types of floss

Floss may be waxed or unwaxed. Many people prefer the smoothness of waxed floss, feeling as though this type moves more easily between teeth. Waxed floss can be the best choice for the person who must floss between tight spaces. The advantage to unwaxed floss is that the strand of nylon is absorbent. The absorbency of unwaxed floss can make a difference in efficiency, pulling more debris from small spaces. Unwaxed floss is great for the person who wants to remove the highest amount of debris and plaque from the teeth and gum line.

Floss for specific situations

There are situations in which flossing technique must be altered. Dental bridgework contains two crowns and a pontic. There are no spaces between the three false teeth. There is, however, a space beneath the false tooth. This area cannot be cleaned with the toothbrush so needs to be flossed with a product called dental tape. This hygiene product is flat and wide, suitable for bridgework and larger spaces between teeth.

Keep your smile healthy and attractive! Choose floss that will keep you motivated towards daily use. If you have questions about oral hygiene, call 773-772-8400.
