What cosmetic dentistry can do for you

Are you looking for a brighter and whiter smile? Bleaching or whitening treatments may be a good choice. Veneers, dental bonding, and crowns and fillings that look like natural teeth can fix your chips and cracks, while Invisalign corrects crooked teeth with clear, plastic aligners, so you’re straightening secret is safe with us!

Today’s dentistry can also replace missing teeth with dental implants that function just like your natural teeth. Still other treatments correct gummy smiles. These procedures, however, aren’t merely cosmetic, even though looking good certainly influences how you feel.

A number of studies in recent years confirm what the ancient Greeks knew so many years ago. While it may be unfair, facial beauty is seen as the mark of truth, morality, intelligence, and nobility.

A nice smile is preferable to a thinner body or better hair. Of the more than 1,000 people surveyed by global research firm Kelton in 2012, 45 percent agreed with that statement. They were willing to put their money where their mouth is, as 3 in 5 people were likely to invest in keeping or restoring oral health and beauty.

Smile! It does your confidence good. That same Kelton survey found 25 percent of people thought those with a flawed smile were less confident, in addition to less attractive. Even more telling, 48 percent of respondents said they were more likely to remember a person’s smile and not their words upon first meeting. Let your smile make a great first impression!

Speaking of memory, researchers in the Netherlands found subjects who repressed their emotions performed poorly on recall tasks. Are you unhappy with your teeth? You probably won’t smile, and when the mouth is so responsible for conveying how you feel (verbally and non-verbally), your expressions are suppressed.

Another survey by the University of Cardiff in Wales found that women whose frowning was inhibited by Botox injections reported being happier and less anxious than their counterparts who frowned. The 2009 study notes women didn’t feel any more attractive, which eliminates what you may have assumed about the procedure — that they were getting a psychological lift from their improved appearance. It appears smiling helps and reinforces our feelings (for the better). The lift it produces has been compared to a runner’s high. Think of how great you felt after a good workout or even a brisk walk. Smiling works like that.

If you’re asking what cosmetic dentistry can do for you, the list of benefits goes on and on. Good smiles have been linked to:

  • Reduced mental and physical stress
  • Greater wealth (in one study, smiling waitresses got better tips)
  • Happier marriages
  • More professional competence, fewer setbacks

Since an attractive smile and good oral health frequently go hand-in-hand, cosmetic dentistry can also help minimize physical problems thought to be connected to gum disease and decay, including heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and uncontrolled diabetes.

We can tell you all of this, but why not find out what cosmetic dentistry can do for you firsthand? Call Big Smile Dental at 773-772-8400 to schedule a consultation.
