Dentistry Diagnosis: Do You Have a Toothache?

If you're experiencing a pain in your mouth… then you might have a toothache. Before you call your dentist in Chicago, please know that there is most likely an underlying cause… and it helps to understand the root of the problem and practice preventative maintenance by following some oral hygiene guidelines.

It might not be fun to floss after every meal, or to brush and rinse every day… but it's even less fun to have toothaches!

Simple Remedy for Common Toothaches

Some toothaches may be caused, or aggravated, by a piece of debris lodged between two teeth. In these cases, tooth aches can be relieved by something as simple as rinsing to clear the mouth of any debris and other matter.

Note: Don't place an aspirin between your teeth and gums to relieve the pain of a toothache because the dissolving aspirin can actually damage your gum tissue.

What About A Broken or Fractured Tooth?

As long as quick action is taken, a tooth that has been broken, fractured, or displaced is not a cause for alarm. If this ever happens, immediately rinse the mouth of any blood or debris and then place a cold cloth or compress on the cheek near the injury because this will keep down swelling and minimize the pain of tooth aches.

Try to place the tooth back in its socket while waiting to see your dentist in Chicago. If you cannot locate the tooth back in its socket, hold the dislocated tooth by the crown instead of the root, and place it in a container of warm milk, saline or the patient's own saliva and until you arrive at the emergency room or dentist's office.

For a fractured tooth, it is best to rinse with warm water and apply a cold pack or compress. Ibuprofen may be used to help keep down swelling. If the tooth fracture is minor and the pulp is not severely damaged, the good news is that it can be sanded or restored by a dentist.

Note: If a child's primary tooth becomes loosened by an injury or an emerging permanent tooth, try getting the child to gently bite down on an apple or a piece of caramel because this may help the tooth to easily separate from the gum.

What Our Patients Say

5 star review by martha

Wonderful!! Always wonderful!! It's been 30 years now since we first came to Big Smile Dental. Every visit is always met with kind and courteous help at the front desk. I always feel very cared for and the care is gentle. I live 40 miles away from Logan Square now, but I still travel to see Dr. Siegel because I trust him as a person and as a professional. I trust my family to his care!
